Mausoleum

Olney Abbey Mausoleum, constructed in 1918, with the second addition in 1920 and a final addition in 1964, graces the cemetery grounds right inside the ornate brick and iron entranceway, just past the Memorial Garden.

The Olney Abbey Mausoleum was built by the Portland Mausoleum Company, as subsidiary of Parker and Banfield Construction Company of Portland, Oregon.  In the latter part of 1917, the City Council granted Portland Mausoleum authority to proceed to contact the public and to make pre-need sales.  About 90% of the crypts were sold before construction began.

On June 2, 1918, a dedication ceremony was held, and at this time all crypts had been sold.

In July 1920, the first addition was completed with about 70% of the crypts sold.  In the meantime, the Portland Mausoleum Company went out of business, and Parker and Banfield Construction Company took over the remaining unsold crypts, which were sold whenever a demand was made.  The last of these crypts were sold around 1957, and until about 1963, when the City authorized another addition to the mausoleum, no crypts were available.

The 1964 addition to the mausoleum added 228 new crypts, which form a handsome exterior of polished marble accented with brick.  An impressive new entrance to the interior keynotes a design of quiet, contemporary usefulness that lends beauty to the exterior. J.C. Milne Company of Portland, Oregon, was the contractor for this unique “wrap-around” exterior wall of garden crypts, which were built at no cost to the city. The Milne Company also handled all of the pre-need sales.

There are currently no crypts available for purchase in the Mausoleum.  However, there are a number of niches available in both eco-niche room, and glass niche wall.
